BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of those muscles that cause the persistent lines to form.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows of people between the ages of 18 and 65 years of age. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is designed to last up to four months.
The injections are done by Dr. Grover using a tiny needle to several areas between the eyes and over the eyebrows. The procedure itself takes about ten minutes with only brief discomfort during the injection process. Frown lines will continue to relax up to one month, with noticeable results between one and two weeks. It is a good idea to avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, Advil, or other NSAIDS for five to seven days prior to treatment to reduce the chances of bruising.
You would not want to receive BOTOX® Cosmetic if you:
- have an infection at the proposed injection site(s),
- have a known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation,
- have ever had a reaction to previous botulinum toxin products such as Myobloc or Dysport,
- or are pregnant.
Tell Dr. Grover if you have had any botulinum toxin products in the last four months, have recently received an antibiotic by injection, have a neuromuscular disorders such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, have had surgery on your face or have plans for surgery, have bleeding problems, take muscle relaxants, take an allergy or cold medicine, or take a sleep medicine. Do not start any new medications until you have told your doctor that you have received BOTOX® Cosmetic in the past.
Minor side effects include bruising, swelling, and tenderness at the injection sites with a slight risk of temporary eyelid droop, blurred or double vision, decreased eyesight, or nausea.
There is no recovery time needed, and there are no special instructions after your injection. It is a misconception that you should avoid lying down for several hours after receiving your treatment. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the muscle and cannot migrate, or spread, simply by bending over.
